Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Mimi, Paul & Charlie!
We hope that 2023 has been a wonderful year for you and that the Holiday season will be joyous and filled with happiness. We celebrated Christmas 2022 in Scottsdale, Paul visited for a week before Christmas and Pam visited during Christmas week. This included a nice Christmas celebration at Torbrook with Mimi.

2023 allowed us to get settled in our new surroundings. Mimi is well cared for and comfortable at Torbrook Manor. It is a small group home of 12 residents, so she has an opportunity to be friendly with the other guests. I visit her several times a week and take her out to lunch periodically. Early in the year she fell twice and refractured her femur which she first did in October 2022. She now requires the support of a walker and continues to receive physical therapy. There are planned activities at Torbrook that keep her occupied and happy.

Torbrook has a very nice Thanksgiving celebration with the residents and their families. Pam visited during Thanksgiving week and was able to spend time with Mimi.

Paul has settled into living at the Vi at Grayhawk, making many nice friends and engaging in activities. We have a charity foundation at the Vi run by the residents, which provides college scholarships to employees and employee dependents. It is supported primarily by resident contributions. Paul was elected to the Foundation board this year and is the development committee chairman. We typically provide 35 to 42 scholarships with an annual budget of approximately $300,000. A very gratifying activity that supports our future generation. Many of my friends are Bridge players, so with their encouragement, I have been taking lessons – not very good yet, but it’s great social fun.

This May, Paul took Pam on a 16-day trip to Italy, visiting Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Rome, Orvieto, Assisi, Lucca, Cinque Terre, Florence, and Venice. It was a wonderful Tauck-led tour with only 20 guests, great guides, and great restaurants. The restaurant below is operated by a wonderfully friendly family with an 80+-year-old mother as the head chef.

When in Florence, Pam took a picture of me at the Neptune statue. Two days later Shutterfly emailed photos from the past, 20 years previous that were on file with them. What a coincidence!

The Wine Tasters

Each summer Paul and Charlie visit Pam, Paul & Tracy in California. This year Pam treated me to a Quincy Jones 90th birthday celebration concert. Then we drove to Paul and Tracy’s in Sonoma County. I helped Paul with remodeling tasks in their new second home in Petaluma and enjoyed wine tasting at one of the many fine wineries in the area.

Paul and Tracy continue to enjoy their lives and business activities. As executive director of End Well, Tracy’s organization promotes end-of-life experience that matches an individual’s values and goals. One of their major activity just completed which brought people from all over the world together in Los Angeles and the internet.

Pam has a new job as Vice President of Finance for Garrett Leight, LLC. This is a small international eyeglass designer and manufacturer of high-end eyewear based in Los Angeles. She is enjoying her new position with a smaller company with lots of responsibilities and challenges.

I continue to enjoy having a second home in Flagstaff. Now settled at the Vi, I’m able to enjoy visiting Flagstaff weeks at a time in the summer and have shared getting away from the Phoenix summer heat with friends. I’m still maintaining my golf membership at Aspen Valley Golf Club in Flagstaff but I haven’t been playing as much as I like. My New Year’s resolution is to golf more in 2024.

We have a new car in the family, a 2024 BMW 740i. Just received delivery in mid-November. It handles and drives better than all the previous Beemers I’ve owned. The electronics, display, safety, and entertainment options are so numerous, that I’m considering going back to Duke for an electrical engineering refresher course. It will be great once I learn about all the options.

May your fondest wishes come true this holiday season and let 2024 be your best year yet! You are very much appreciated, and we love visitors. Bless you all.

Happy Holidays

Mimi, Paul & Charlie
